New York’s Inspire Results Challenge

NY Inspire Results Challenge Winner

This summer, members of the Bain NY office gathered for the annual NY Inspire Results Challenge.  We heard from five Associate Consultants who double as Inspire Case Team Leaders outside of their Bain casework – and then voted on which project we felt was most impactful.

As background, Inspire is a volunteer-run 501(c)3 consulting firm that works with local non-profits with a focus on youth and education. Founded in 1998 by four consultants from Bain & Company and The Monitor Group, Inspire has grown to some 430 volunteers across 17 cities in the United States.  Inspire provides an additional outlet for Associate Consultants at Bain to get involved in the community, learn new skills, and take on step-up roles. In the last year, over 60 Associate Consultants at Bain NY have volunteered on 10 different cases with clients focused on everything from after school programs to LGBT rights. The Inspire Results Challenge provides three of those teams the opportunity to share their results to compete for the “Most Impactful Inspire Case of the Year.”

This year, we heard about three incredible projects:

  1. The Springboard Collaborative team developed a pricing strategy and best practices for school partnership through expert, school, and comparative organization interviews. Their work will help an organization that uses unique summer programming to eliminate summer learning loss and to close the achievement gap, focusing on parent engagement and incentives for success.
  2. The As We Grow team created a donor outreach strategy and implementation tools for the organization,a Netherlands-based international NGO focused on raising money to improve education in Kenya. These tools have already helped As We Grow expand their social media presence, win new grants, and follow up with donors.
  3. Over two phases of work, The Future Project team helped outline a growth and org strategy for this emerging social enterprise that dispatches “Dream Directors”—transformational leaders trained to inspire and support others in pursuing their dreams—into public high schools across the country. The Dream Director harnesses the collective energy of the students and supports them in building passion-driven Future Projects that impact their community and engage and transform the culture of the entire school. In Phase I, the team focused on an expansion strategy, making recommendations to help TFP optimize its model for scale. In Phase II, they dove deeper into a few priority areas and supported the organization as it sought to implement some of these changes. In particular, they helped shape org and decision-making structures, and developed programs to improve support for the Dream Directors in the field.

While all of the teams are making a great impact on their respective organizations, there can only be one winner of the challenge.  After tallying the audience vote with our Partner and Manager judges, The Future Project won “Most Impactful Inspire Case of the Year” and went on to wow the rest of the NY office at our summer offsite where they presented their story for a second time. Congratulations to The Future Project team and kudos to all of the ACs who are helping organizations in their communities – in NY and beyond!
